GF's laptop won't switch on got all her pics music on etc

On start up it goes through the initial start up screen the black background with white writting. Then instead of going to the Windows page with the scrolling blue bar it comes up and says

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or sorrupt:
\windows\system32\config\system

You can attempt to repair this file by starting windows setup using the original setup CD-ROM

Select "r" at the first screen to start repair"

She doesn't have any of the original cd's that came with it. Is there anything that can be done to repiar it? Or to access the files on the computer? Any ideas that could have caused this?

just download a copy of whatever operating system it is (xp / vista) on your pc, burn a copy and whack it in her laptop and do a recovery... (although may be hard drive failure causing the error)
