If it is illegal to park an uninsured car on a public main road? What are the convictions if you get caught? Cheers

i believe it only needs to be taxed....of course the only way to get tax is to have insurance but you only need that on the day of application for tax....

Are you sure?
What happened if for some reason the car rolled away (handbrake cable snapped for instance) and it hit something/someone?

You do need insurance for the car to be on the road, came up in the discussion about driving other cars third party.

i think if a rozzer drove past with ANPR then it'd flash up and they'd ask a few questions.
Logic is: how did it get on the road if it's not insured? It could have elapsed since it's been parked, but i imagine you'd want to move it on/off every so often.
Couldn't be confident either way, but it's the kind of risk i'd take.

When I cancelled the Corsa insurance this morning, they told me it was an offence to leave a vehicle with no insurance on the public roads.

The offence is not having insurance against third party liability while the car is on a public highway.
So yes, you need insurance to park on a road.

To confirm this again, I have an insurance renewal infront of me here.
To quote,
'For your own protection, please remember it is an offence under the Road Traffic Act to use or leave your car on the Public Highway without insurance.'
