Evening.. Got a bit of a problem and need some advice on what to do really.

Took my car 2 the body shop on the 1st of April for a respray.. I've had it booked in for ages and the guy told me that it would take just over a week to do. My mates have taken their cars there before and never had any problems and the quality of his workmanship is spot on. But every week when I ring up he's got an excuse and its not ready. After almost 2 months its really starting to piss me off and Im getting tired of him giving me definite dates that it will be ready for me to pick up which he has no intention of honoring.

Im sure the job he does will be excellent, and Im sure it will justify the cost (£1200). But thats the price I was willing to pay when he said it would take 7-10 days.

Basically I wanted to know what my rights are and how I should go about payment (Ive paid £400 as a deposit and for paint + materials).. I just don't think its fair paying full whack when he's taken 8 times as long as he said. What should I do?

The Body Shop, I thought they sold smelly shit for girls

Erm have you asked why its taking so long? You could threaten him but I doubt it would help much, If hes not started go get your car & demand the £400 take it somewhere else?

Get a date in writing off him for completion. If he wont give you one then mention going to trading standards and citizens advice - might do nothing or it might actually scare him a little into sorting it.

If he's not started it go & get the car & your deposit, if hes any sort of half decent person he'll agree that 2 months to paint a car is no way to run a business & will comply.

Yeah its a really good setup hes got, the cars been kept inside all the time. Thats partly the reason why I took it to him in the 1st place. He said on friday that It was all done and just needed to respray my bonnet cos my badboyyed extensions had bubbled a bit so he said he would fix it for 2day.. But when I called up to see if I could collect it he told me he hadnt had chance so wont be done till thursday. I havent had chance to nip down cos of uni and work so this could be complete bullshit. Im goin on thursday though so thats y im seeing what advice you lot can give beforehand

You dont have much choice as he'll of done the work you were quoted for.

You should always get a written quote and a specified date when it will be done by on it. That way you can allow for reasonable delays, but anything stupid like this you could argue not paying full price.

Mine took 10 weeks. Was told it would be a couple.

In my experience bodyshops are pretty unreliable

my old car took ages to have some work done. Went up there a few times and he werent there when he said he would be. He ended up fitting a few things for free and giving me a discount.

i wouldn't worry to much they pretty much rules themselves bodyshops, if you give him to much hassle he will do a crap job and end up rushing it, i would bite your tongue and wait a little bit longer hopefully you will have it back as it sounds as if hes nearly done with it

maybe he can drop the price for you when you go and collect it, for all the hassle hes put you through

i know how they operate they see a young guy and they take the piss, they get on with other jobs even though you've paid etc
