Is the 6288 still only unlockable via ringing 3 themselves and paying them stupid monies? Looked online, some sites offer 'email' unlock codes, but the majority I read said only 3 can do the task, and any sites saying they can unlock it are actually just lying...

No idea mate, mine was unlocked when I bought it (paid a premium for it) but my dads is locked to vodaphone, ive still yet to find a 'cheap' way of unlocking it

If it's a BB5 phone, then normally you have to pay £30 or so for an unlock code from the SP.

Sam, 6288 isn't listed on the second link (only 6280, not compatible flash).
Also I can't be arsed to go to Leeds either

Ring service provider- unlock code is between £20 and £25 and free if you have had the handset for over 12 or 18 months (*depending on your contract length*)
