Vauxhall have offered workers at their Ellesmere Port plant, 9 months off on 30% pay !!

Hard times indeed for the motoring industry at the moment.

Is this a one off occurence?

If so, I guess staff could get temp agency work for 9 months and be gettign 30% for nothing. Could work out well for workers if they can find other work in the mean time. I realise however that in the current climate, thats a big if

EDIT: I deleted my original post when I realised I had mis-understood the proposal

but that would be classed still as their main job, so any other job is taxed at 40% so technically they would make much if anything extra

No its not, all incomes assessed at the same amount whether you've got 1 job or 3!!

40% income tax is only anything over 36k-ish regardless of how many jobs you have!

Unless it's changed since I last checked, second jobs are taxed at 40% regardless of salary.

Personal Allowance 6035
Anything up to 34800 20%
Over 34800 40%

edit - afaik, weve just covered it in my tax module at university, no mention of extra jobs making a difference, is something worth clarifying

Just googled it actually and can't find anything mentioning 40% on second jobs so maybe it has changed.

bloody hell, the big bosses keep coming in and wringing our necks for more engines we're already putting out more than 1600 every 24 hours, good old asian markets

we got offered 2 days off (mon 22nd and tues 23rd december) but they are trying to make us come in on those days just to get more engines out

USA will not let GM or Ford go down, no chance.

I read into how Ford & GM got themselves into this mess in the first place, and it would seem that their retirement packages, pensions and health care that were offered to staff are top notch and EXPENSIVE. This is what is draining them of all their capital.

My works not hitting targets, and my employer has a big chain throughout scotland, he pulled the plug on a branch in kirkaldy as it wasnt making so we're kinda shitting it.

I'm not even finished my apprenticeship....

Maybe the UK car industry will take note of the pricing in the UK and stop ripping us off for new vehicles. The prices in the States (on the whole) and the same in $ as they are £ over here. I can see a few of the 'biggies' going out of business soon, Evo magazine is running a stats page on car sales this month which is interesting.
