Author Heater not working in my van - any advice?

I've just bought a van, the previous owner reckoned the heater matrix needed to be replaced.

any suggestions of what to look at before attempting this as its a dashboard out job which I'd like to avoid.

What do you mean not working?

Fan not turning on, not getting hot, directional thing not working?
