I had an oil change done about 3k miles ago, because I was starting to do more mileage to Uni. It's now due for the annual/10k service.

I check my oil weekly, and just realised it has used about 1 litre of oil in the past 3k miles, since about September time.

Is this normal?! Is it ok as long as I keep an eye on it and topped up?! There are no visible signs of oil loss out the exhaust, so could simply be a small leak somewhere. If it isn't a leak, and it's losing 'through the engine' is it ok etc?!

Just after a bit of reassurance really.

is it giving off blue smoke?? park over a dry spot at night and check underneath in the mo. also check the crankcase ventilation for oil, blockages etc. then id start looking at your valve oil seals

They did use 5w30 oil which I thought was weird, but he insisted it was ok. I'm going to ask for 10w40 on Monday when it's in for a service.

Pretty certain there is no blue smoke and nor is there oil on the driveway when ever I park on it.

engine flush can loosen tar inside the engine and this can block up the oil pump pick up pipe up

20 valver is right about that, engine flushes are a quick way to kill a high mileage engine.

Is there any obvious leaks, around the sump, oil pump or oil filter?

According to autodata 5w30 is the correct oil.

No, no leaks. May be it is a bit smokey

I won't be getting a flush done and like I say, service due on Monday. I'll just poke up with the oil consumption as I need the car to last the next 4 months as cheap as possible.

I guess it's to be expected on a 88k mile X10XE

Willay, wasn't your XE a little on the thirsty side when it come to oil?

its perfectly normal - mine used almost as much oil as petrol

make sure the oil pressure switch isnt leaking - i was using about 1 litre every 100 miles when that broke

also 1 litre per 1000 miles is classed as "normal" consumption

My x16xe has used 5 litres of oil in 6000 miles lol..

3 litres @ the change and then topped up as and when, madness.. tis on 98k though nearly and no leaks or owt, runs fine, bit of blue smoke sometimes but not a massive thing, just on idle lol...

Just gonna live with it methinks

X code engines should have 10w-40 oil
Z 5w-30

prob worn rings/steam seals do to mileage and age

just keep an eye on the level, but tbh it will be fine with no oil in! had them in work with less than .5 or a litre in!!!!

I top it up even if it's in the middle of the high and low marks. I'll make sure 10w40 is put in it again.

Random question but have your dipsticks got stupid plastic red things on the end which act as "markers"?
I miss the old fashioned bit of metal with nicks cut out for max and min, not some piece of shite red thing which is dead inaccurate (in my opinion haha) with bobbly plastic bits at either end of a thin rectangular bit haha.

Just keep an eye on it. Wont cause you any issues unless you let it get low.

I think 10 - 40 will help matters too. As the one thats in it is a little thinner then the oem recomended.

My ctr has used about 1 litre of oil over the last 4k. But thats because I drive like a badger

Very true.

Just had a service done today and requested 10w40 so I'll see how I go.

Stokie Dave - yes, it does have the red plastic end to the dip stick. It's pretty shit, 'cause if you twist and pull, it goes further up. Plus there is always oil above the maximum marker, but often none below

No silly. I had an oil change done before I started Uni, as I had been doing loads of short journeys over the summer.

New tyres were needed and was done, then they noticed a CV boot was split. So I had the annual/10k mile service done at the same time to save time.
