what sort of countries do movers usually get placed then? and is it more likely that i would be placed abroad rather than the uk?

Movers travel where ever air cargo goes, or is expected. Ive worked with them in Afghanistan, Cyprus, Las Vegas, Belize. Ive known them work where ever you can name, Barbados, California, Canada, Europe. If a plane can land or take off thats where youll find a mover!!

I was in for 7 years, started 12th jan '99 and absolutely loved the first few years, I was single, earning good money and travelling the world. Went to some amazing places like Vegas and Canada. I was an Avionics Technician and in the highest pay band. Several grand a year more than drivers or suppliers. My first posting was front line Harriers. I loved it. had a real sense of camaraderie. My second posting was front line again. This time on Nimrod R1, these are 'spy planes' and as such, constantly at war. I spent months living in tents or Portacabins in the desert. I got into a serious relationship back home and the two didn't mix. I PVR'd and ended up building jets at BAE, better money and consistent hours. But, I wouldn't have gotten that job without being in the RAF to start. I would think long and hard what you want with your life and use the RAF to help you get there, DO NOT listen to the blokes in the careers office, they need to fill seats and are looking out for the RAF. You need to speak to people in the RAF and get advice on what are the best trades.

well theres not alot of things i could do in the raf due to my qualifications so i think a mover would be best for me however, i would like to speak to someone who is/has been a mover in the raf to see what its exactally like but it sounds pretty good and the best part is that i get to travel the world which i really want to do and one of my main reasons for wanting to join the raf

When you say travel the world are you prepared to spend an awful lot of time in really shit places and in really shit accomadation? More and more work is in these places, dont get me wrong certain sqns do get the good dets and ops. Thats down to luck where you end up working , you can request to work at a particular camp but its not defo !

Been ages since i was there, but this bar was were people went for their last piss up before flying into Iraq or Afghanistan. This dude was US special forces and wouldn't let me take a pic
So we got him wrecked on brandy sours

Yes on both counts. Obviously aim as high as you can, the higher up the pay scale the better. If you have limited quals and mover is best they will offer you then go for it.

Also, once you leave the RAF you will have a great CV and genuine examples of teamwork and life experience. It really does open doors once you leave.
If the discipline side is putting you off then don't let it. The first 8 weeks is the worst it will get but on basic training. They just give you shit to get you into the RAF way. Once that is over with you get it a little bit at trade training, then once you are posted you don't really get it much, Maybe once a year you have a block inspection of your rooms but nothing like in the Army were you get it in the neck every day and made to do long runs. If you are into sports, like skiing there are loads of chances to get away on exped. I went to Val d'Isere in France for a week, Everything included and full lessons all week and it only cost me £100 or something, RAF paid the rest (about £600)

You can leave within the first 2 weeks of basic training, but only the real plebs do that. Basic training isn't the real RAF, It is a bit of bullshit and once you get a posting and get out of training it really is a breeze. There is no marching around and all that crap. I used to turn up to work in trackies and t shirt, slide my overalls on top and work like that. A lad left during trade training when we only had a week left of our 9 month Avionics mechanics course, I went back to do my technical training 2 years after and was half way through my 18 month fitters course when he turned up there again. Turns out, the bird dumped him, he had no job so joined up again and had to start all over. We laughed at the stupid badger.
