without taking the valves out and looking etc and the engine in the car running etc is there any tell tale way off telling that valve guides are cracked??

none at all.

head off, valves out and checked over. if you suspect them to be cracked replace them. you do not want bits of valve guides breaking off and going around your engine. theyre a bit tougher than a cylinder head. can make a mess. ive had it happen
