Ah an james if your in the know, do you have any advice on how to protect 5k savings? And whats coming next, inflation or delfation?
Was thinking of buying some gold as an investment for the next few years, whats your opinion on this?
Everyone seems to have a different opinion on what to do

Short selling means you make money when the share price falls

My boss has lost thousands and thousands on his RBS shares. Used to work for them and had been accumulating them for 21yrs befor he left.
Has had to postpone his early retirement.

I wouldn't say i'm "in the know" but I work in investment banking so I know more than your average Joe.
For the sake of £5k i'm not really sure if it's worth any real investments because in investment terms it's not a huge amount when you take into account trasaction fees etc.
Gold and commodities in general are probably the safest asset at the moment although nothing is guaranteed.
If you want to take minimal risk then I would consider a fixed interest bond. The money has to be invested for a set period e.g 1/2/3 years but you will get a guaranteed return higher than your average ISAs/savings accounts.
Just want to add this: Please don't take any of my advice as gospel........I'm not trained to give this advice, it is simply my opinion

thats what happens when banks arent in control of their own books and dont let their share holders know how much deep shit they are in. Could say it was overpriced back then!
