I'm looking to pick up some Cisco kit. After a router and managed switch to begin with.

Where is the best place to pick this stuff up from? Looked on eBay but still pricey but will pay those prices if i need to.

Download a program called Packet Tracer.

Simulates all routers and switches with the CLI to have a go at configuring.

I'm ment to use it, but, although i've dabbled in it, doing 2 chapter test A WEEK on a saturday (while i'm working Mon-Fri), I haven't really used it that much.

The router CLI is good for practice though

no emulator will be the real thing, Ebay is your best bet for discounted stuff but you need to be sure what you're buying as theres lots of crap.

Thats very true Will, BUT, emulation is a good place to start before you spunk all your money on some rusty old outdated kit?

yes and no, to really understand it from the ground up I'd prefer a physical device then an emulator.

Also the emulators typically dont behave properly and give a false impression.

I've learnt most of mine from cli experience from the start, and now i run a cisco 877 at home for giggles.
