I decided to get my own kit so in the last week I've bought the following:

Canon EOS 450D D-SLR
Lowepro Altus 160 Bag
Camlink TPPRO24A Tripod
SanDisk SDHC Extreme III
Canon BG-E5 Battery Grip (on order)
Canon RC-1 Remote Control
Canon Speedlite 580EX MkII Flash Gun
EF-S 18-55mm IS f/3.5-5.6
EF 50mm f/1.8 MkII
EF 70-200mm f/4.0 L IS USM (my mums lens but I always use it)

Is there anything else you'd advise? I was thinking about some filters but I'm not sure really on which filters to get. Can anyone recommender a brand of filters and also what size should I get for my lenses? I'd like a protection filter, but I'd also like a filter to add more contrast, and maybe a filter to let in less light so I can get more blurred backgrounds. I can't really afford any major lenses at the moment so I'd ideally like to just add some more cheaper items to my kit. Can anyone recommend any cleaning products for the camera/lenses?

Judging by what you have written id say you already have far too much equipment for a beginner!!! Id get the cheapest UV filters you can find to protect the glass. If you want more blurred backgrounds try a larger aperture.

There's a section for this, called snap day or something like that.

I'm not a total beginner -- I've used a 400D for like a year or so, but I'm still not 100% on a few things. I haven't even tried the flash gun yet! What filter would you suggest? There's tons on eBay... Literally thousands! And what size would I need?

Thats a lot of kit for a beginner mate! But going from what you said I get the impression you have been using you mums camera? You need to have a look at the lense to determine what size filters you need, look on the end of the lense it should say something like 52mm or 56mm etc

Ah right. I thought that was the zoom or something... My kit lens says 58m, and the 50mm says 52mm -- sound right?

Uhm, I managed to get the flash gun and 50mm lens 2nd hand off my mate, but other than that it was full RRP in most cases. I got the tripod for a bit cheaper as I bought two but other than that it's full prices I'm afraid to say.

I'll list the items with their 'average' price in front of them...

£470: Canon EOS 450D D-SLR
£40: Lowepro Altus 160 Bag (x2)
£70: Camlink TPPRO24A Tripod
£35: SanDisk SDHC Extreme III
£110: Canon BG-E5 Battery Grip (on order)
£20: Canon RC-1 Remote Control
£330: Canon Speedlite 580EX MkII Flash Gun
£90: EF 50mm f/1.8 MkII

It's lenses that I'm going to struggle with. I have everything I want except lenses, and the lenses I want are all 'L' lenses which are stupidly expensive. My mums 70-200mm lens was £1.4k originally so I'm very lucky to have access to that as there's no-way I'd be able to afford it myself.

I already have one... But I'm after a filter to blur the backgrounds using other lenses at 50mm with no zoom is pretty difficult to get a decent shot.

I've already apologised for posting in the wrong section. It's not too difficult to do as you've just proven. It's actually 'Snap Day' you plank.

I wish I did... I haven't bought anything in bloody months. I'm off work and bored silly so I thought I'd get something. I'm not allowed to drive/ride at the moment so I'm very bored lately.

You're lucky to have a bird who'll splash £500 on you for Christmas!

Just get a UV filter, just protects the lens from dust or flying objects if you are snapping rallies or wahtever.

For my 450D I got some UV filters from here:
http://www.premier-ink.co.uk/acatalog/58MM.htm

Super good service and the lenses seem reasonable quality.

I just went for the 58mm UV / Haze Filter (and 62mm version for my other lens).

Getting the filter on and off, without actually touching the glass of the lens. Bit pointless as I don't intend on taking my ones off and was a tight fight so nothing should get behind them.

I got it it as it has the shutter button, iso button, af button, and a few others on it so that when your shooting portrait your hand is in the same position it would be as if you were holding it normally at landscape. plus you can have 2 batterys in it

I had the BG-E3 grip on my mums 400D and it really makes the world of difference -- it feels like a different camera. So much bulkier and easier to handle with a big lens. I can't wait to receive my BG-E5 for the 450D.
