Whatever is the best deal out there I would go for, taking into consideration how available spares are at the scrappy. 306 dturbos are a good shout, can be picked up for cheap, good mpg, not dog slow, group 5 insurance. Just check the door looms as they can be a pain in the arse and usually break as they get older (affects central locking and leccy windows)

my brothers corsa cost me £500 on an R, 1.0 (not so good but mih) 25k on the clock, nice condition, 1 owner from new, and flew through the MOT yesterday no advisories having only covered 500miles since the last one.

do you particularly want a little shit box hatch back? you can get a lot more car for the money.
obviously a bigger car will thirstier but you can get something quicker, better equipped and more comfortable for 500.

you could get a laguna, 406, mondeo all turbo diesels with plush ride, plenty of space, full electric goodies, power steering etc for £500 - why would you want a shitbox hatch?
