I previously had a child passport, however that has recently expired and as i'm now 19 i obviously need an adult one.
So is my new passport a Renewal or a First Adult Passport??

the help booklet doesn't really provide any help on this one

First adult passport.

My friend who's 22 had applied a few weeks ago. You now have to have a passport interview where they grill you for 20 mins about where you were born, your parents DOB etc etc

Well logic/common sense should dictate that as you are not a child any more, you cannot get a renewal for your child passport, so therefore you should go with the first adult passport option.

mmmm, i think i'll wait til the advice line is open on monday and give them a buzz, but even if it is a renewal and they already have my details then they'll surely still need a new photo as i look so different to the old one

I got a new passport about three weeks ago, I'm also 19 and previously had a child passport. I just renewed it because my child passport was my own and not on say a parents and it came back fine. Very very expensive mind you, had to bring out the lube and everything lol.
