swapped out a 1l 12v engine in my mates car for one the exact same, but it wont start, it turns over but wont fire, we then managed to get it started by spraying some petrol down the throttle body, but then it wont idle it just dies. any ideas?

Got the fuel pipes on the right way?
Using the original ecu? even though that should stop it from sparking I think.

its not the ecu for the engine its the ecu for the car though with the same transponder, its sparking and it runs when we spray fuel down the TB but just wont idle or start at key on its own

Is it getting fuel?
When you crank it over press the schrader valve on the fuel rail with a screwdriver etc, be careful because if its getting fuel it will squirt out, if it isnt getting fuel it will just dribble out or not come out at all.

I presume holding the throttle when cranking dosnt help. ICV wont cause the car to not start.

You definitely have the right ECU, reader and key chip together yeah?
Does fuel come out of the fuel line when you turn it over?

I would have said that is the problem but 12v will start and run for a couple of seconds without the immobiliser, mine did when i lost the chip from my key.
Try changing your crank sensor or check its plugged in, its underneath your startermotor, will have to get at it from underneath.

tryed changing the crank sensor made no difference, i think he's been using the spare key trying to start it..... i will get him to try the key with the chip

That could be the root of the problems dude.... standard immobiliser cuts the fuel supply if the chips etc dont all marry up

after you crank it whip the plaugs out and see if they are soaking wet, try the plugs from the old engine,
also crank it over with all the plugs out it may be flooded,
