Having a geeky moment!
I bought a Panasonic cordless impact wrench on eBay, the list price was near on £300 but it was advertised as having a broken charger or a dead battery being as a new charger was nearly £150 and the battery £75 it sold for pittance! I tested the charger and it was working fine but the battery was not accepting a charge, it just got REALLY hot and then the charger cut out.
I did a little investigation on the net and there were people talking about jump starting NiCad batteries, the theory is the batteries fail because of a build up of crystals in the cells eventually causing the battery to fail completely but it is possible with enough current to heat up the cyrstal and turn them back into a soft compound so I attached the battery to my Mig Welder..
I thought the worst thing that could happen would be the battery explodes but it bloody worked! The battery now shows the specfied voltage, will accept a full charge and lasts for ages! I'm amazed

I'm contemplating doing this with my laptop battery.
I would rather lose by a mile because i built my own car, than win by an inch because someone else built it for me.

A good way to sort laptop batteries is buying li-ion cells and replacing them, there are a few guides about.

yup, old man has a huge 22000µF (roughly that) capacitor that he charges and the connects to batteries to get them going again. It doesn't always work though.
Also, you can charge alkaline batteries (like duracells etc) but it does require a decent charger and it can be again a little hit and miss (that and exploding cells).

As John says you can buy the LiIon cells but they tend to get quite expensive!
I've got a batch of dead NiMh AA's, I'm going to try it on those!
