They're really useful, but you're misunderstanding the use of them.
They aren't used to tighten up a bolt completely, just to get it threaded. If you're trying to put a bolt on in a place that you can't see, it helps you to get it threaded so that you can then use tools to tighten it properly.

ah i get what its used for now.. hiden bolts are a shit to start and a shit to actually get a nut to in the first place so you use this to hold the nut to then start it on the thread.. pritty cleaver tbh
