Was looking at going away for my bday with the girlfriend for a weekend.

Not one place i've looked at will let you book for one night, I don't have enough holiday left to go for 2 nights.

You'd think that in an economic downturn people would welcome the business for any amount of nights

Is that going by their online systems?

Try phoning them. I'm sure they will let you have a room for a night.

I have done before, 2 nights though, but that was because I had the holiday for me to take and it was a stunning b&b. For work I stay in Premier Inns.

The Missus will do 1 night stays at her place, during the week or weekend, although they only have 16 bedrooms so book up quickly/in advance.

Her hotel is http://www.CallowHall.co.uk in Derbyshire. Its not too far from Hinckley; take the A444 to Burton, then the A515 to Ashbourne; 45mins tops.

you've got Alton Towers, Dovedale, Ashbourne, Derby all on your doorstep and its not a million miles from home

Try booking it through Superbreak, loads more dates available and about £30 cheaper.
