He sounds like a pretty good mate giving you the money in the first place, I know he obviously took the bike without asking... but I bet most of my mates would just say sorry and offer to buy me a pint 
I say take him out for a drink when he gets back and buy him something nice, but worth less than £380 
Then again if it was me, I'd probably keep it all because I'm a cunt.

He gave you money which you presumably used to get a new one, now you happen to have the old one back in a state of disrepair as an unforeseen occurrence. When he gets back from his travelling ask if he wants the bike (assuming you don't want it and want to keep using the new one), to which he'll probably say you can keep it or sell it or whatever seeing as it was 3 years ago

Well thanks for all the advice, he's a good mate and am sure will see the bike sooner or later when he gets back, but I don't really want to get rid of the bike of have to give up the cash
