same with famous and infamous. Is there any need for the extra confusion. Inflammable to me means not flammable

I believe it's because we took our language from a big range of others, so i believe certain stuff didn't cross over well.
But that could be all crap, i do understand how they say English is the hardest language in the world to learn, due to different tenses and same words with different meanings.

Im sure its to do with the ignition source. One means it will ignite via heat alone.

Yes you do. But some things will combust at x deg c. Whereas other things need to be ignited. Its somthing like that. A mates dad's a fireman and explained it to me...was a few years ago now, so cant quite remember it

Inflammable can be misinterpreted as an antonym of flammable and so taken to have the opposite meaning to that intended. Nonflamable would be the opposite.

flammable means it will burn, inflammable means it can explode or something like that

Inflammable means keep the fuck away from sources of ignition.

Flammable is for stupid people that don't understand this and Americans (stupid people).
