Imagine a car is on a conveyor. It is in NEUTRAL. It has a winch attached to the tow eye on the front. the winch is attached to a solid object.
Now suppose the winch starts pulling the car forward, the conveyor matches the forwards velocity of the car but in the opposite direction.
The car will still get pulled by the winch, but the wheels will be spinning twice as fast as the ground below it moves, the force acting on the car is seperate from the force acting on the wheels.
This is the same principal. The planes engines effect the air, not the ground, so no matter what the ground is doing, the plane will move as the engines push against the air.
The original question DOES NOT say that the plane stays still, just that the conveyor matches it's forward speed.
Hope this answers it for you.

So you're saying it doesn't take off, I get it now.

It does take off, I'm explaining how the conveyor has no effect on the forwards motion of the aircraft.
The conveyor is there to confuse the idiots into thinking that it's velocity in the opposite direction of the aircraft will cancel out the aircraft's forward velocity, when it won't.

But did the car take off or not? And if it does what happens when the cable connected to the winch runs out?

If the planes take off speed is 60knots and the conveyor belt is moving at 60knots how will air pass over the wings

i cant get my head around this one. am i right in saying jet engines suck in air and push it out the back to create thrust so the plane moves forwards and the quicker the plane goes the more air gets under the wings so it takes off? if thats the case how can the plane take off it its on a conveyor belt not moving?

Yes that is the basic principle.
The wheels are free moving, so the plane could be thrust forward regardless of the speed of the conveyor belt on the wheels. Thats the bit you need to get your head round. Dont think of it like a car where the wheels are driven and you would therefore not be able to move it forward should the conveyor match the wheel speed.

The lift is generated by a difference in pressure above and below the wing, due to the shape of the wing.
I think the main thing that you need to get past is that the plane isn't standing still. The conveyor belt doesn't stop it moving. The engines push air, whether its taxiing on the ground or in full flight.
As long as you understand that the plane is able to move, you will understand that it is able to fly.

So..... did the car take off then or what? We should try it with a 98 plate corsa IMO.
