Has anybody had ago with any of the many kits available now? I'm looking at possible getting one for my dad for Christmas, but don't really know if there are any that are actually decent without spending a fortune or is it just a bit of a novelty and waste of money? Bitter kits in particular

Novelty that stinks and tastes crap. My dad used to make wine but now all the stuff is sat at the back of the garage and has been for over 2 years, its just easier to buy a bottle/cans from the shops as it tastes better and you wont be stuck with gallons of it.

I think Cider is ok if done properly.
By ok I mean tastes reasonable.

I used to do it, it is hard to get right, but mine was mostly piured away or used for cooking
I would rather lose by a mile because i built my own car, than win by an inch because someone else built it for me.

My dad goes in and out of it and he usually reports good results. It does seem to be quite a precise process though.
