Is it worth buying older stuff on Blu-ray seen as though they wouldn't of been recorded with Blu-ray in mind like the modern stuff? Or is that not how it works?
Just a general question I wondered about so thought I'd put it out there

i've got the godfather trilogy on blu ray, it looks quite alot better in the lighter scenes, the dark ones look alittle grainy still though. no idea what it would be like next to an ordinary dvd thats upscaled

not sure with blu rays but if I download an old movie in HD the quality is no where near that of a new movie. still better quality than the normal version though

I think films have always been filmed at a much higher quality than they went on to be released (i.e. VHS, then standard DVD) - so after a bit of remastering they are then a lot higher quality than you'd of seen.

The resolution of old film is much higher than 1080p, blu-ray old films should look amazing.
More recent stuff that was still recorded on film isn't as high resolution but still high enough for good blu-ray conversion.

Its originally recorded to film which is an analog medium and has an infinate resouloution. The resoultion for the dvd/bluray is down to the decive that scans the film into the dvd/bluray format.

Film does have a resolution and it's not infinite.

It's got a theoretical resolution, that's not really the same as the difference between 575i, 720p or 1080i/1080p.

It's got a finite amount of crystals on it which is just about exactly comparable with the resolution we are talking about when scanning it in to convert it to blu-ray.
The amount of crystals is well above 1920x1080 so it has a higher resolution than blu-ray.
