I was looking into this over the weekend. £200 for an engine off eBay and my mate can rebuild it for £400.
I'm looking to buy a Corsa already done as it's then just the rebuild needed.
Not going to lose much when i stack it

IMO buy a XE'd car (cavvy, calibra etc), drive it to make sure the motors not a rat, take the engine out do a service, waterpump, cambelt etc then just put it in the corsa and enjoy it.

I would only rebuild it if it was knackered TBH.
WP, Belt and a good service yeah but if it runs well id just drive it until it broke.

If want price on rebuilding, machining or parts drop me a u2u. I see it as if building a shiter, throw it in as u wont look after it. If want a tidy conversion/car and going to keep. Rebuild it.

Don't bother rebuilding it.
I put a lump in my old Corsa from a Calibra with 14 service history stamps. I just changed all the bits, WP, Cambelt, Filters, Oil, Plugs. It ran beautifully for the 20+k I had it.

i did the same with my xe corsa. bought, sorry i mean brought i think? a calibra for 500 quid with 130k on engine full service history etc, just put engine straight into corsa and enjoyed it. when i sold it, it probably had near 160k on engine still ran like a dream. didnt tap, tick, smoke or anything. was a great engine.
if you buy a good engine, just put it in.

oh and a lot of advice on rebuilding it refers to any engine. not specifically an xe. most 1.6's will have had their lives shortened by heavy foots so unless you know its a good engine, give it a check over. no matter what engine it is.
