A proper space frame will not load any parts of the cars body. That lets you use lightweight composite materials for body panels. Also, a properly designed space frame can be much stiffer than a monocoque, especially if we're talking steel monocoque verses a steel space frame. This ought to give you a better strength to weight ratio.

All in all, a space frame isn't necessarily better, it's just a type of design.
