My car slipped its cambelt when turning it over and it bent two valves and cracked a valve guide, so It was sent to a garage they took the head off did valves, stem seals, valve guides, head gasket, cambelt kit and a few other bits. Anyway I went to pick it up and it was fine when idling and revving then took it out for a drive and about 300 yards down the road it started tapping very loud which gets worse when its revved.
Obviously it is being fixed at the garage at their expense but im just wondering what everyone thinks it might be?
Mechanic reckons it is a hydraulic lifter/tappet, does that about sound right?
Is it a head off job or can it be done by taking the cams out?

it's the tappets, do not run the car if you can help it. What happened to me after changing gasket is the same, then we took it to pieces again and found some of the old gasket blocking the oil feed pipe. Took it out, fitted a new head gasket and it worked fine.

check your oil level before opening it up though, then check that the oil pump is working

if oil pump failed would have or should have oil pump warning light on dash. if its a lifter it wont be that loud and might clear. if its really loud, id suggest taking head off again and check guides etc?

I havent got to do it I just wanted to know what it is, its just weird that it was fine for a bit until i drove it.
Its at a garage that did the work so they will be fixing it as its their fault.
Also was no oil light on.
I will ring the mechanic tomorrow.
Thanks.
