Gentlemen
I am going on a family trip to the lovely scottish highlands in a few months but have a problem. The problem that I have is that including myself there are 4 adults and one child. I have two cars, a ford puma and yaris t-sport. Neither of which will carry 5 people. The trip is about an 8 hour drive.
This leaves me with a few options
Take both cars - this means splitting the group into two, plus the Yaris is not too good on long trips and the passengers will get a headache!
Rent a big car - Don't like renting + risk of high costs if damaged.
Option Three however would be.....
Get a big old 5 series (mid 90's) - these can be picked up with around 100,000 miles for around a grand.
Plently of room and comfy. Buy, run it for a few months, go to Scotland, Sell (ideally for not much less than purchase).
Does anyone on here run a high mileage BM? How do you find it.
Does the above sound like a plan? any other options?
ta loves
xx

just rent a zafira? surely thats much easier? how much are we talking?
high mileage BMs are fine if they have been looked after.
you can get a very decent e39 M5 for sub 10k now, go that way, 400bhp, 5 litre V8 ftw.

BMW on 100k shouldnt be a problem, if it is expect to dig deep though, well deeper than to repair a puma or yaris.
If its just for a single trip then i'd probably be looking to rent something to be honest.

I know, but how cool would an old 5 series be for the trip, rather than a zafira
I get the point though

Enterprise car hire will do a Vauxhall Vectra for 23.71 per day.
Is it worth buying a new car for one trip or is this more about you liking the idea of a 5 series?

Depends how much you would lose on selling the BMW. If its more than the hiring of a car then its stupid. But it could work out to be a great money saver.

Had a 520 e34 shape with over 200k on it. As long as it sounds ok when you buy it and runs decent just make sure its had a service and away you go.
Also had a 525 e39 on 240k which ran like it had 40k
