This has probably been asked a few times before but which really is the better engine? Not just speed wise as im not a foot to the floor kind of guy, but also for reliability, everyday drivability? It will be going into my corsa and will have all gaskets, belts, water pump ect changed, and i will be using it mainly onroad with the occasional trackday. Any help would be great

Not a great deal difference tbh. iirc they XEV has a better crank. But still share the same problems as the XE Gaskets, lifters etc.
I dont think the XEV has the same porous problems as the XE.
Id go for the XEV if it wasnt performance you were after. Purely becuase there are shit loads of spares available for them at the moment.
The only downside is the EGR shite.
But getting rid of all that and the Air con pump and all the other unneeded pish and you wont be far of XE power anyway

i have no doubt the 20xe would be better if they were both rebuilt but like i said they would prob only be getting new belts, water pumps ect. Tbh im swaying more towards the x20xev with it being the newer engine and probably not thrashed half as much?

We have a xev Calibra it still shifts for what it is.

i often pop in to the scrappy local to me. in the last 6 years (since ive been driving) ive seen about 3-4 cars with C20XE's in them go into there.
Went there the other day, there were 4 2.0 vectra's 1 2.0 Astra and a 2.0 Omega
One thing i hate about the X20 is its plastic camshaft cover and its liability to leaks.
Also they have a oil level sensor that tend to leak quite often.

Do you have any idea how they compare to each other? Do they not have the same peak torque aswell?

My 20XE has been ok and that wasn't fully rebuilt. Random sensor issues but still going strong with at least 7-8k since the conversion.

I wondered this a while ago and had a look on Mig Web. I'd still go for the 20xe as I've always wanted one. But I think the xev can be tuned just as good as the xe, it just cost more iirc. Heres the link mate and there a link in there aswel to more about the xev.

sensor issues would have occurred in the donor vehicle.

cylinder head, inlet, cams, exhauast manifold
160bhp or more i think....might or even been 170bhp
hence making it better than a redtop

The thing with the C20XE is that a good number of them are almost a quarter of a century old when you think they came out initially in E plate 16V GTE's. Not only do you pay a premium for them but they will in all likelihood have been driven far harder as they are typically in performance orientated model-topping cars (except the Calibra which is trumped by the turbo). One would like to think that as a result of the fact they are more prestige they are treated better in service intervals etc but as the wraths of time have caught up with the cars they have all been available as a cheap budget ripper so may wll have suffered neglect.
At least the X20XEV is far newer and in greater numbers so sourcing one is far easier and cheaper but saying that by the time you have bought all the extras needed to do the conversion - mounts, shafts, service parts, exhaust etc the percentage difference in outlay to get a good C20XE is negligable.
