About as safe as Corsa of the same age, but more expensive.

I don't reckon a Clio for a grand would have the NCAP rating which would make you pick a new one over something else, I'd say they're no better than anything else of the same age.

2000 onwards are 4 star, budget needs upping to 1500 though for something worth owning.

If you're going to be working on it for her thrn i'd say a Corsa B as you probably know those inside out
Me personally i'd consider a 206. Nothing to do woth safety though but because my old 106 was rock sold and never broke down on me once in the 14 months i owned it. I also like the styling of the 206 and are only now being totally phased out by the new arrival 207.
However, 1k is not going to go all that far and i'd be looking at the best small car i could pick up for that cash - i.e mileage, insurance and so on..

Toyota Yaris. You will easily pick up a 1.0 VVTi for £1k and that'll have under 80,000 on the clock. As reliable as a mountain, 55+mpg, and a 4 Star safety rating for the early models.
