If you're heading down to Devon/Cornwall way then i would recommend somewhere like Churston which is about 15mins away from Torquay. Stayed at the Churston Court Hotel the few times i've been down there, the suites are really decent and prices aren't too bad. Although it's been a few years so i can't say what it's like now - http://churstoncourt.co.uk/

It wasn't just Newquay though. It was most of Cornwall.
Could of been the company I had as one guy didn't want to do anything. 
Found a nice rock club in Truro and enjoyed that, saw Vex Red I think.
