Dudes, Basicaly, gotta sort a car this weekend and this can go one of two ways.
I have £500 cash for deposit(as house ate up most of my savings).
The two options are Clio 197 Sport or....ready for it....Clio 1.5 Diesel.
Ive done a spreadsheet **gay i know** that works out exactly how much both cars will cost in total over a 12 month period this includes accurate Finance, Fuel(based on 800 miles a month), Tax, Insurance figures
Clio 197 - £5320 per year
Clio 1.5 - £2468 per year
A saving of £240 a month with the Diesel.
Clio 1.5 is basically the best £ for £ car you can buy for saving money, around £3k to buy, Reliable, Insurance group 2, £30 a year to Tax and 67mpg.
Option 1: Have the diesel for 18 months by which time ive worked out i would be able to save £5400 comfortably as well as pay off the Clio which i expect to be worth around £1500-£1800 at that time meaning i would have over £7k to put into a car in 18 months.
There are plenty of Pros to this option but the massive Con is that i would have to drive a diesel clio for 18 months with only the thought of a slick car at the end of it to look forward to.
Option 2: Buy the 197, which means borrowing approx £8k leaving me around £200 a month after all car costs(Tax, Fuel, Insurance, Finance) and house bills mortgage etc and in 3 years time having a car thats possibly worth the same as the outstanding finance and being back to square one. Massive Pro to this is being able to have a nice car for those three years....
Would you do?
Essay over,haha.

197 will soon stop being fun when your stuck with it for 3 years. I'd go for the derv for 12 - 18 months and save up a bit.

No mate, calcualtions are based on actual cars currently for sale, ie. I will buy one or the other this weekend:
Clio 1.5Dci65 2003 with 38k miles from Trade(therefore with some sort of warranty)
£3250
Clio 197 2007 with 28k miles again from Trade.
£8,595

Why not just get a 182? £5-6k and you can get a bloody good one. Just as nippy, comfy with everything you want, and will save you £££££ compared to a 197 which it sounds like you cant afford!

Been there, done that, the one i had was immaculate, Racing Blue, 11k miles and Trophy Recarros, was like brand new, loved it. Sold it to buy the house last July and any 182 i buy now will never live up to it and ill be bored with it in a matter of weeks.
Looked into Trophys to try and go one better but anything low mileage is 197 money anyway.

Depends, I would be happy with a clio 197 for a couple of years to thrash about in and drive to work etc but i like driving and think i would find the derv to boring.
Why not get sometihng in the middle like a fabia vrs

I'm more of a petrol kid of guy, just sold a 1.9cdti Astra that i had boxed. Great car but it wasnt for me.
I would only have the Clio diesel to enable me to progress to a better petrol car in the long term. With £7k to put in i could possibly by an Astra VXR outright in 18 months going by Vauxhall depreciation

Theres not a chance mate but i worked it out on book figures and i can't see the 197 averaging 30mpg tbh. Either way the diesel will be cheaper on fuel.
