phase 1 engines like to blow up
early ones rust underneath the rear lights
early ones have bubbling paint on the rear spoiler
go for a black top 2001 onwards, imo.
then you'll get a black interior and not the horrid grey one.

I had an X reg for 1.5 years and it didn't cost me a penny in that time. Great cars with excellent handling.

It has got the fucked HCV, so will need to sort that as I was roastin (and couldnt put the cold on) on the 100 mile hack down the motorway getting it back , and I noticed the temp gauge was getting a little high at times (around 80-90mph), but then would drop back down to half way again when slowed back to 70, hope its nothin major, didnt start doing this until about 60 miles away...

Dont really wanna say, I got it for a healthy price though, It was on eBay, buy it now of £1300 and a low starting bid, threw a last minute bid in and got it for the low starting bid, the lad tried to cop out of selling it to me cause he wanted alot more he said but I told him he had to sell me it cause it was legally binding contract and I'll take him to court I never would of but it worked! and just drove down to his address before with me mate...
Think these look better than an Escort GTi though, dont seem to look as dated.

you're right, a new HCV should sort out the overheating.
just watch the oil levels. check them every week and you should be fine.
If the engine does decide to go then you can always fit a 1.7 puma one
my mk5 zetec-s was amazing. the handling was perfectly balanced and so far nothing much has compared to it.
I lowered mine and stuff but found that it handled much better on the standard setup.

I'll change the HCV and see if thats helps with anything then, it never went into the red just went upto the black line and then backed off into the middle again, normal driving round the streets it was fine just sits in the middle, just on the motorway

yeah, my friends old one did this.
it should stay in the middle all the time.
HCV should be about £50 i think.

Maybe the previous owner got up to no good in it so it pops up as an alert on the number plate recognition system. I used to borrow years ago a mates car who had been banned for drink driving. I used to get stopped daily as they thought I was him.
