I'm looking to get dad Drop In TV mountain bike DVD for fathers day but they're only available from Canada. I've worked out the exchange rate but wondered if I'd have to pay any import/HMRC taxes when it hits the UK?
I've had a quick look on the net but not found anything - what do you guys reckon? Any experiences?

More than likely, do you know how they plan to send it? IE Fedex, UPS?

I buy lots of PS3 games from Canada online - have never had to pay tax on any of them.

You may or may not need to pay tax when it arrives in the UK. If its just a DVD they'll probably let it go but you never know.
HMRC will contact you if they think you need to pay anything extra when it arrives in the UK.

It just says Canada Airfreight iirc.
They'll be a free t-shirt in with it too.
I've sent them a question using their online chat so hopefully they'll come back to me. Be a right pain if it gets stuck at a Parcelforce depot.

depends how they send it. when I bought my MTB lights from australia it was all good until I got a letter from HM and customs 2months later demanding £80

I wouldn't let it put you off, if it's got all the shipping marks on it & the invoice you'll have to pay a fee. If you don't & someone catches up with you, say it was second hand. IE not taxable

Obviously not - but cheers, that is exactly what I wanted.
It does give the option to 'Send as gift' so I might try that to the misses address or something.

Gifts only get double the allowance so its still only £38 worth free. After that presume it will get caught and work out how much it will cost - import duty will probably be around 8/10% on the total cost including shipping, then you also have VAT to add on.
If it will cost more if you get hit for taxes IMO its not worth the risk. Small items are more likely to get through - larger ones are not
