... to make an (early) XE loom fit the corsa? I remember reading about people doing plug and play ones, but what exactly is it you need to modify?

theres a chap on migweb who sells the plugs, thats the best bet. Otherwise match it up colour for colour, theres plenty posts/guides on it.
