Are coilovers generally a better ride quality to shocks and springs?

i would say yes, tried two different springs and shocks combo on the corrado, and once i got coilovers it was much better, but the coilovers were twice the price so expected.

deffo not as harsh over bumps and feels like the suspension actually does something other than hold the car off the wheels

No it doesn't, it totally depends on the quaility of the components and materials. You look inside a penske or ast shock and compare it too a Gaz shock you'll see where the difference is.

Put it this way, Koni yellows with eibach or customer spring rates will be far better than jamex or apex coilovers.

Also dependent on the design ride height doesnt necessarly cause a worse ride, if you have coilovers with pre-load adjustment it really wont make a difference apart from more bump steer depending on your steering rack layout.

From my experiences yes, as coilovers tend to be a little more road focused, better damping, where as shock/springs tend to be more 'fastroad/race'.

Everybody says its a better ride, but I never noticed the difference tbh. Not quite as bumpy, but still not that great.
