Take it for a spirited drive, sometimes the cat can get 'clogged up'.

It was my father-in-law's car, he took it to the local garage and apprently the coil pack was buggered and sending unburnt fuel through

Possibly fucked the cat due to that. If it was just overfuelling/ not burning fuel it'd smell quite different.
