What happened then, 4chan found out the old guy was having a birthday party so they used the power of 4chan+internet and some randomers showed up at his care home and a load of birthday vards and gifts just randomly arrived???

If so, that is great for him! If not, I fear I have gotten the wrong end of the stick

Basically, yes. Someone posted it then 'operation epic mail' started and thousands of people sent him cards and gifts
