Ive got a 2.0DTi Astra (mk4). It has a cam chain instead of a belt which is great as the book says inspection item at 100k. Its hitting 90k in the next couple of weeks so might have to start thinking of getting it 'inspected'.

What exactly does this entail though? Is it literally having a look at it for signs of wear, or is it an engine out job to test it on a piece of machinery? Also, does it need secondary parts replacing rather than the chain itself, such as tensioners or the water pump? Ive some idea what you change with the cam belts, but ever had a cam chain before...

Cheers

I know with the VAG engines they say change the chains as they get noisey, some last over 150k apparently. Not sure about Vauxhall though sorry.

Its a diesel so its noisy anyway, no idea what a noisy chain sounds like, I assume it would be more obvious than the tractor engine under the bonnet?

I think you'd know if the chain was loose - just think Corsa C 1.2 on idle

The cam chain kit normally consists of chain, tensioners/pulleys and rollers I think.

Replacement is front of car off and side of engine off iirc. No idea on water pump etc.

Might be worth u2u'ing warren.g.
