We have a 1.4 pug 206 on W plate. It had crunching reverse gear and first wasnt easy to select. My dad read that in most cases it is the clutch cable that is at fault.

We got new one, fitted it and it became worse. When we press the clutch pedal, we get a massive whining noise from gearbox. We managed to get it working some how once, went for a test drive and as soon as we went from first to second same happened. Fitted old cable and it still does it.

Another thing i noticed is that there is a lot of free play on the bit on gearbox that is moved by clutch cable ( totally forgot what it is called)
Is it likely to be dead clutch at all? or gearbox?
Car is on 70k miles.

Any help is apreciated!

Sounds like the clutch needs adjusting.
