In Illustrator I know how to "map" an image to a 3D object, and in Photoshop I know how to cover the contents of a layer with an image/gradient/colour etc.

I have an image of a metal bar that I need to "wrap" a vector image on whilst making it 3D (the image is 3D as it is basically a photo of a metal bar), how do I do this and do I use Illustrator or Photoshop to do this?

If I use Photoshop the vector just looks 2D and crappy.
