Just watching Spooks and started wondering if they're allowed to tell their families what job they do - even if no details are given. Or would they have a cover job?

Anyone got any good stories... ever known a supposed spy?!

You're allowed to tell only immediate family who you work for, but not what you do.

Closest I know to anyone spying was my grandad in WW2, being sent over enemy lines as he spoke fluent German to find out about troop movements and so on. It's pretty much how he ended up meeting my grandmother.

Was just about to say that, My cousin works for some defence contractor and even though he just sit's in an office in Cheshire he is still bound by these condition's, had to sign the official secret's act etc.

Never met any spies though, although i do know a few SOCA Officer's but that's nowhere near the same

Roommate in my first year said his parents (how they met) worked for Mi5 and neither of them really let on to what they exactly do. Couldn't tell if he was bullshitting or not but his old man was a serious odd ball from the few times i met him.

My uncle use to know a guy that would never tell anyone what he does for a living.

His answer was always 'i cant tell you'.

People use to say he worked as MI5 or something, how true it was though i dont know

I'm pretty sure a spy would have a cover story rather than giving the very suspicious line of "I can't tell you" when asked about his profession, OR atleast i would hope our intelligence services are a tad more sophisticated than that

I filled out all the forms and everything to apply for the Secret Services, but then I got my job so never posted them. Even filling out the forms was exciting with them saying how I couldn't even tell anybody I'd applied for the position
