I currently have a MK5 Golf 1.9 TDI.

I've just bought my first house, and have little need for a car as efficient as what I've currently got since I'll end up walking to work most days of the week.

I'll still need a car for getting about on work jobs (mileage paid) and weekends etc.

Pros of getting rid:
- Its worth £6.5k all day long, so if I bought something else for £3.5k I'd put £3k in the bank
- It would be parked under a tree and not used for days on end = pointless having a nice car
- Expensive to service and parts generally not cheap
- Can buy something better in a few years time (hopefully!)

Cons of getting rid:
- Love the car - great to drive, will be sad to sell
- Cheap to run - doesn't cost me much in fuel, or insurance or tax
- Looks good turning up to clients houses in a decent car, turning up in a shitter makes you look shit at your job
- Only just serviced and taxed it (well, 2 months ago)
- Wouldn't end up buying anything fast or fun, want to keep my costs down

So, the question for you CSers is : What would you do? Is it worth owning a decent, but common, car you drive once a week and otherwise sits getting filthy?

I've asked everyone else I know, so might as well get some opinions off here

Sell and buy a DTi Vectra C.

Pre facelift ones cant be worth much more than 2.5K now.

That way you still have a nice car to drive and you dont look like
a pikey at clients houses.

Hmm. I'd have to think on that one. I don't mind Vec's, but then again I'm only 22 and I'm not sure its quite my thing.

The principal is right though and pretty much what I'm thinking. Theres a lot of decent looking stuff about.

Would be gutted if I bought something and it was a pile of crap

I had my Vectra at 21!

Or what about a pre-facelift E46 3 series?

Think my 323i cost me just over 2000

Would look at an early E46 beemer, I've been looking at E46's lateley with the intention of getting one next year and the prices are pretty good

Only problems are the servicing and also insurance, as for some reason BM's come up with really high prices for me.

I had a C before. I did like it and could see myself having another.

Slightly wheezy engines though. Wouldn't be a van either.

Unless you are strapped for cash I'd keep it.

A new "cheaper" car is never as cheap as it originally looks!

That's my worry. I put £3k in the bank then find I either (a) hate downgrading or (b) get landed with a massive bill.

Hardly strapped for cash, but not loaded either
