Thinking of getting one as i quite like them. Will only be a 1.4 which will probably be sloooow but not too fussed about that atm. So whats to look for i.e common problems/rust spots etc etc.

My first car was a 1.4 mk3 CL. Slow as hell! But was mega reliable, only problem I had was the original water pump failing at 130k. I had it from around 100k to 155k miles. Cost £50 aswell sold it about 4 years ago now and its still going. Definately the most reliable car I've had.

Boots tend to rust around the bottom of the rear window, bottom of the doors/wings, check for rust underneath aswell. Then just look out for the usual things, smoke/mayo etc.

My aunty bought a 1.8CL and the only reason why she had to get rid was it was too rotten underneath to pass an MOT and its had 160k on it!

These must last for EVER then. ive seen quite a few for sale with quite high mileage, and they all seem cheap for the amount of car your getting. for example for a 96 with eleccy everything with about 90k on it very clean, no rust etc. for £545....compare that to a corsa for that price it would be a rather bog standard item. think i will deffinatly have one of these soon and thanks again for the advice

Check the underside, I have just found a hole in the passenger floor of my girlfriends mint mk3 gti. The cars had an easy life and is only on 100k

I think it may be to do with the sunroof, blocked drain or something

I had a 1.8 gl, absolutely drank fuel and the electric windows kept packin in as well as the sun roof. Think the axel might have been bent too because it kept poppin rear tyres. No rust though and mechanically it was very solid

They can be abit dogee but parts are so cheap for these. Get onto golfgtiforum.co.uk as there are always loads of gti's being broken and you could get yourself a nice gti interior/wheels etc for next to nothing

- Water leaking in either from the sunroof or heater box. Whaever the cause a cheap and easy fix.

- The sills are very bad for rotting. Especially if someone has jacked the car up on the sill and caused it to buckle.

To be honest the list could go on but i've owned 4 and no matter what the model, all really easy to fix and cheap too. (excludes VR chains).
