Transfer files? I've had my phone well over 12 months now and not once needed to transfer files to my mates. The only time I've needed to was with a IPA, installious supports this now via bluetooth or wifi anyway.
Because you don't need to doesn't mean no one else finds use to send Videos/Pics/Music/Documents. I certainly make use of the transfer features.

MMS costs me 20p, I send about 4 a month at the max, not everyone has an iPhone.
Not sure what the "not everyone has an iPhone" comment is about, Pingschat/Whatsapp are cross platform - BB, Android, iPhone, Nokia.
Eitherway, sending files is free (on wireless, otherwise it's part of your data allowance. But then again i get true unlimited data).

If I couldn't get a signal (at home) then I'd be changing networks within the 14-day period.
What if you're somewhere, Hotel abroad for example, where you don't get a signal but have access to a wireless connection?

True, takes 30 secs to install and there are loads of benefits of using something like this.

I get 50 free MMS a month, i used to spend £3-5 a month some months without realising. They cost 30p on orange so 3 costs you best part of a nugget.
Its hugely convinient hence its popularity, just because you dont use it doesnt means thousands of others dont

I've just got whatsapp, been good so far and fairly instant.
How do I make it alert me to new messages though like when I get a normal text as it doesn't do it!!

Whatsapp is the best of these im clients IMO because you don't need a username or pin or anything, and I'd say 75% of people I know have apple/blackberry/android.
Only really any good for picture messages as i and most peep have unlimited texts but does come in handy for one of my mates who always runs out of minutes and texts but not dat

bla bla bla
I know it's useful - just not for everyone, just like everything. Didn't realise it was available on other phone software as well, quite cool.
However, if I had a wireless connection, I'd be on facebook chatting on there instead. As an educated guess, I'd say most people who had the app installed would be on Facebook, as well as the people who don't have it installed

Cant fault whatsapp. Handy for if im ever offshore where theres a wifi connection and can talk with mates rather than sharing 4 phones or computers between 200 people
I initially downloaded ping chat but wasnt impressed with t. Plus whatsapp automatically adds anyone in your contacts with it into a favourites list
