For a high mileage Petrol astra, making a bit of a knock at the bottom end on idle in the cold weather so i thought a slightly thicker oil may help?

Thicker oil will take longer to work its way round and wont get into places a thinner oil would so not sure what would be best

Normal fresh oil and a additive?

i thought this, but im sure id heard something about thicker oil for higher mileage. or is there an engine specifically for higher mileage engines?

Iv read before on oils things like suitable for higher mileage engines etc but dont really know. Im sure someone on here will

There's a reason it's making that noise, if you keep running it all you're going to do is make it worse. If you did it now maybe all you'd be looking at is a set of big ends, if you keep running it you might end up writing the engine off.
