It's the future of guns I think, you need massive capacitors and electromagnets to make it go that fast though.

There is quite a bit on the internet about hand held rail guns, obviously can't fire anything that big/fast though.

What explodes in the second one? If it magnets there's no gunpowder.. Did it malfunction?

30 megajoules and mach 7 in a fraction of a second probably causes that.

Its the heat build up from the friction on the shell causing the air to ignite around it.
