i dont believe this is possible because it would only damage valves wouldnt it?
because my sister has just had a cambelt fitted to 206 2.0hdi with 60k mileage and a new water pump and now the big ends are knocking...am just thinking its just wear and tear...
whats peoples thoughts on this matter?

Nope couldn't really damage the big ends. U would notice if the timing was out as would be flat and probably stall.

Knocking and loss of power...
Timing is out, diesel knock is pretty loud on certain cars,
Timing being out is the only thing that explains both complaints, f it was just a knock Id be looking at something chattering off the timing cover.

Either the timing is out or the crank pulley is knackered, very common problem on the peugeot 2.0 hdi engine,
edit: if its lost power it sounds more like timing is out
