Hi my girlfriend has got a new acer laptop running windows 7. At first the laptop was working fine with the router, then it started dropping connection for around 10 mins at a time and then work again. now it wont connect at all even though it can see the network? All the other laptops connect to wireless and so do my iphone and her phone so I can't understand why this is? Any ideas?

I would try removing any record of the network from the laptop and start again (can't remember where the option is for this but it'll be there somewhere where you can see the network)

Otherwise I would try uninstalling the WLAN card and then scan for hardware changes to let windows re-install the drivers. All this would be done via Device Manager

You tried installing the latest device driver for the WLAN card?

Have just installed the latest WLAN drivers and still no luck. Windows troubleshooter says to reset the router but doing this does not do anything. I can't see why it is not working as every other device can connect to the router perfectly.

I'd expect it to be a faulty wireless card, I've got the same issues with my laptop at the moment and it's because the Intel 4965AGN has packed in. I've got an Intel 5300 as replacement which I need to fit at some stage, but the same part repaired another laptop of mine in the past.

Strange question but what anti virus/Internet security software has been installed/removed on there?

Reason I ask is that sometimes if you don't uninstall one properly before installing something else, it can fuck up your networking in Windows (I've sorted many a system that had this problem, even with mobile broadband Internet as well)!

Works fine wired. Not tried it on a different router. As it's new I'm going to just restore it to factory settings and wipe everything later I think. It had a trial norton anti virus on it but I removed that straight away and installed avast. The laptop see's the router an signal strength etc but won't connect.

Before you do that, download and run this file - it's the Norton Removal Tool, just to satisfy my curiousity in case it is Norton leftovers that are fucking things up:

ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Removal_Tool.exe

Sounds like your WLAN card is knackered. As it's a new machine, can you get it swapped under warranty?
