Hi
My friends c20xe is misfiring, and it seems to be doing it through the airfilter (induction kit). Iv flashed the codes and it came up with 73 with I believe to be afm. Only does this from start up and going to pull away after that it's fine.
Just so we defiantly know the right part to get, could it be anything else.
Cheers kieran

Have you tried looking for it?
Kidding on, mine did this. It was a late XE, only it did it whenever it was getting hot - sitting in traffic, sitting with the engine running. I'd try to rev it up but the thing wouldn't go past about 2.5-3k revs and as you say, would 'backfire' out the induction kit. Not exactly something that fills you with confidence.
The only thing I thought it could be was that the timing was out quite majorly but a quick check meant this was ruled out. I ended up never finding out what it was, it only happened intermittently anyway. I went and got a new engine and this was when I started to get really pissed off - this new engine (early dis-pack setup) did the exact same thing, from the misfiring side of things but not so much backfiring through the inlet thankfully. I've now changed everything I can think of and the only thing left that was also fitted to the previous engine that's still being used on this one is the injectors (been told these are fine to use). I'm planning on changing them to creams as soon as I find a decent set.
I flashed the codes on the previous engine but got nothing that relates to the problems I was having. I was thinking that because the EML didn't come on for long when it did that it didn't store the codes or something. But now I've re-flashed the codes and the AFM has come up as well as the injectors (thought they might have).
Basically I've still not got to the bottom of it but it's looking like it's either been two seperate AFM's that were fucked (unlikely) or the injectors are the culprit. Everything else has been changed or is new so that's where I am.
Definetely update this if you get to the bottom of it though mate

If it's anything like mine it'll be 'popping' out the air filter, as if it's firing on a cylinder that has the inlet valves open.

It just does it from start up, it will hunt a bit then if you tried to pullaway or give it revs would just pop like a hit from the filter :s once pulled away and moving it's fine works fine. Until you turn car off again and on it will do it lol. Its really weird lol
