So if my engines pre march 1993 and I can proove this, I wont need a cat for emissions? Or emissions just dont matter?

The regulations changed in August 1992. Before then it wasn't a legal requirement for cats to be fitted to cars.
As for the whole pre 92 engines in post 92 cars, I've got exactly that going by the stamps on the cam caps as AW06 says - but remember these can be changed, the whole head of the engine could be changed etc. When I went down to get an MOT recently I explained this to two seperate garages, offered them the proof by removing the oil cap and everything. They bascially said it was down to their discretion whether they tested it to pre or post 92 regs since it was their balls on the block and they refused point blank to do it.
Ended up talking to an old mate of my dads and he sorted me out.

The older engine would get tested the same was as like nova 1.2 carbs do, So a good running 20XE will be well within the limit.
I've heard a few people say about MOT'ers refusing to do a XE, Other than the engine code being 20XE insted of C20XE I don't think there is any way to prove the age of the engine. Unless you took it from a doner car and have the V5 from that (Showing the car is pre 1993 or whatever, and the engine number)

The emissions test is done on the year of the engine not the year of the car!
Taken from the MOT Testing Manual
MOT MANUAL
Vehicles Fitted with a differnt engine
Test according to which is older, engine or vehicle.
e.g. A 1995 car fitted with a 1991 engine (of whatever make), test to 1991 standards for emission purposes.
Note: The onus is on the vehicle presenter
to prove engine age.

As long as the guy isnt driving round like a chav and the cars built right and is safe. i couldent give a shite if the emmisions are slightly out as long as it goes and stops healthy.

The people at the MOT place won't be worried about what engines in it mate. As long as you can get it to pass the emissions one way or another you'll be fine

mine corsa has got a c20xe in and moter passed it al i had to do was a letter stateing what engine was in it and reg of doner car this is just to cover there arse and there mechanics there no what these engines are and productiön stoped on these about 1993 so you will get the odd redtop with a cat as it was a swap over

Pretty sure that when they put the reg in the engine size would come up? Would maybe not be noticed even if it was claimed as a 1.4, would still be a bit of a risk. Tester might get a bit pissed off if he realised hafway through or something.
